WHOIS is a public database protocol that stores the registration information of every domain name on the internet. When a domain is registered, the registrant's information is stored in this database and made publicly accessible โ unless WHOIS Privacy protection is enabled.
Owner name, organization, country, and contact information for the domain registrant.
Registration date, last updated date, and expiration date โ know when the domain will expire.
DNS nameserver records showing where the domain's DNS is currently hosted and managed.
The company through which the domain was registered, along with their IANA ID and abuse contact.
WHOIS data is used by businesses, developers, security researchers, and individuals for a wide range of legitimate purposes โ from verifying ownership to protecting brands.
Every domain has one or more status codes. Here's what the most common ones mean:
The domain cannot be transferred to another registrar. This is the most common status and is applied by default for security.
The domain's registrant info cannot be updated. Protects against unauthorized contact information changes.
The domain cannot be deleted at the registrar level. An extra layer of protection against accidental or malicious deletion.
The domain is registered and fully active. DNS is resolving and the domain is fully operational.
The domain has expired and is in a 30-day grace period. The owner can still renew it (with a fee) before it becomes available to others.
The domain is scheduled to be deleted within 5 days and will then become available for public registration.
